A Chip-on-Board (CoB) LED is a single LED package consisting of multiple LED chips mounted directly on a thermally efficient substrate without individual leadframe, phosphor coating, or lens like an SMD (Surface Mounting Device).
With this consecrated chip array, a COB LED can emit more light from a small space than a typical array of LED packages (SMD). Here are the advantages of using LED COB:
•Simpler optical/product design can be achieved by using a single LED light source. It is easier for optical designers to create the desired light distribution, whether it is a powerful light spot or a wide flood light.
•Using a CoB LED instead of an array of packaged LEDs simplifies production by reducing the number of units that need to be soldered onto the board.
•The color of a CoB LED is likely to be more uniform than SMD LEDs because all the chips are coated with a single phosphor, unlike packaged LEDs where each unit has its own coating.
COB uses a phosphor compound (consisting of phosphor powder and silicone/epoxy) that will age and degrade after a certain amount of time working to convert blue light into white light.
Instead of using regular phosphor compounds, KCOB uses self-developed phosphor ceramic to achieve the same effect. Phosphor ceramic is a material with a single-crystal structure and does not age easily. Additionally, due to its high thermal conductivity, phosphor ceramic also works as an additional heat dissipating channel, helping to conduct the heat generated by LED chips. Benefiting from this “dual heat dissipation channel” structure, the TC temperature of KCOB can be lower than that of common COB by 30% when working under the same conditions.

COB LED lights are physically yellow because of the phosphor coating, which helps produce white light when the chip is powered. COB LED chips naturally produce blue light, and the only way to convert this blue light into white natural light is to add a yellow phosphor coating, which disperses the light emitted by the diode, converting it into white light.
The simple answer is yes. COB lights have a higher lumen density and pixel pitch, producing brighter light than regular LEDs. In addition, they can be customized with as many chips or wafers as possible, which increases their light-emitting capacity.
Yes, they do get hot. However, they have better heat tolerance, dissipation paths, and thermal performance than many LED variants. However, this does not make them completely immune to temperature changes. If there happens to be a thermal issue that ends up destroying the chip, repairing a COB LED is nearly impossible due to its lower repairability compared to other LED lights.
